Some of the top illustrators and most promising new artists in the world converge each year at the World Illustration Awards. Works in categories ranging from editorial work to children's books to independent artists are lifted from the global visual cacophony in a competition organized by the UK's Association of Illustrators and the Directory of Illustration in California. Many of this year's winners are tapped into movements including Pop surrealism, minimalism, and op art, using these stylistic structures to communicate narratives or feelings in innovative ways.

The overall winners in the top two categories, Overall Winner New Talent and Overall Winner Professional, were San Francisco-based illustrator Jimin Kim and Seoul-based artist Jungho Lee. Books category judge Daehyun Kim says of the two winners, “I get the impression that the participants are interested in expressive technique to showcase their style. Jungho Lee’s picture book is distinguished not just because of his outstanding technique, but great imagination. I think this is why the jury chose his book as the overall winner. I really enjoyed Jimin Kim’s little book. I wanted to peek through the little holes to discover fractions of personality. The title, the story, and the cut-out technique are just in perfect harmony.”

The winners' work, along with that of the rest, are on display for a show at Somerset House in London through August 29, and will tour the world throughout 2016 and 2017. Get a taste of the show with some selected works below.
