The Secret to EDC's Giant, Glowing Caterpillar

As music festivals grow in size and scale, each year it becomes a greater challenge for event producers and promoters to up the ante when it comes to spectacle. In New York, Las Vegas, and San Bernardino, a giant caterpillar raised the bar by providing festivalgoers with a spinning, projection-mapped display. In the above documentary featurette from Vimeo user Buff Laser, a.k.a. Todd Moyer, who in the past created giant spools of laser thread, watch as the 37' tall EDC Caterpillar comes to life amid the raucousness and revelry that was Electric Daisy Carnival NY, EDC Las Vegas, and Nocturnal Wonderland.

Commissioned by Insomniac Events, Todd Moyer Designs' caterpillar employs four HD projectors, each stationed 100 feet away, to "illuminate the sculpture while software tracks rotation and renders graphics in real-time." The result is a giant, interactive creature that serves to separate everyday existence from festivalgoing through stellar sights you won't be able to find anywhere else.
