The phrase "body scan" has a clinical flavor—for most, it's a pair of words never heard outside of a doctor's office, or a conversation about doctor's offices. But artists are adding their own flavors and textures to the term with a new wave of work created by scanning people and objects, then manipulating those digital replicas with all the psychedelic superpowers different softwares can provide. We explored the implications of 3D scanning on the film industry last year in our documentary, ReForm | Bringing Hollywood's Digital Humans to Life, but GIF artists are adapting DIY scanning technology for some really stunning, completely different artwork. Whether scanned with an elaborate array or an iPhone app, these projects range from simple-yet-effective uses, from Zolloc and Mr. GIF's hyperreal scans of himself, to the wild and weird experiments conducted by Hateplow, the Rhizomatiks, and Reed & Rader. Check out their mesmerizing 3D-scanned artworks below.
