6 Spooky Art Shows to See This Hallow-Week

Meat sculptures, a slasher film with brunch, and Lucien Smith’s massive party in the Bronx—the art world has a scary good line up this Halloween week.
From Dario Argento's Deep Red, screencap via

It’s that special time of year again, when, roaming around New York city in the last week of October, we must constantly ask ourselves: costume or artist? Is that a very well executed costume of a Trump Vampire, or does that eccentric artist with thinning hair just have an affinity for black capes?

Halloween is a time when creativity is embraced and partying is mandatory, so of course the art world knows how to celebrate. From meat sculptures to a slasher film screening at brunch to a massive art party thrown by Lucien Smith in an abandoned Bronx warehouse, indulge your inner weirdo with some must see spooky art events this Halloween week.

Kris Kuksi at Joshua Liner: October 15- November 15

Kris Kuksi, Psychoactive Animalia, Mixed media assemblage 2015

Kris Kuksi’s intricate sculptures of found objects, toys, and figurines, are painted monochrome and assembled in a three dimensional Baroque style, resembling eerie shines you might see in a darkly lit church in the final scene of an Italian horror movie. The pieces are at once delicate and overpowering, bringing scenes of macabre mythology to life by juxtaposing creature with machine, god with man, and light with dark. We can imagine Kuksi, surrounded by trinkets and horded objects, intimately crafting a story from the chaos

Shara Hughes, Elizabeth Jaeger, Meredith James and Annie Thorton at Jack Hanley: October 15- November 15

Annie Thornton, Permutations of Chewed Gum, 2015

You know the feeling when someone’s watching, or when you’re watching from behind the blinds? This group show  is all about the window, what we see when we look through it and those intimate feelings of being a voyeur in art and beyond. From Jaeger's fleshy pottery to Thorton’s chewing gum paintings that look a little too much like human organs, the work in this show is not outwardly creepy, but it still gives us chills.

ART SEEN presents Argento's Deep Red at NiteHawk Cinema: Saturday, October 24 at 11:30am

Trailer: DEEP RED AKA PROFONDO ROSSO (Art Seen) from Nitehawk Cinema on Vimeo.

Nitehawk Cinema’s art film series, ART SEEN, is hosting a brunch screening of Argento's gorey murder mystery Deep Red, a whodunit that must be solved with a puzzle of paintings and lot of hilarious horror scene tropes. Nothing like a Halloween-themed brunch and an Italian blood bath to start your week off right.

Halloween-themed Chopped, Except it’s Art Chopped at BHQFU: Wednesday, October 28th, 7-9pm

New York’s “freest art school,” Bruce High Quality Foundation University, is putting on their first episode of the art world remake of Chopped. You know, that reality TV cooking competition that gets chefs to create ridiculous dishes from crazy mystery ingredients, except here it’s with artists and weird art materials. Judges Jayson Musson, Chloe Wise, Ana Fabrega, and Lorelei Ramirez chop artists down to size in this special Halloween themed edition, complete with spooky mystery materials and undoubtedly a lot of puns on dismemberment.

Maybe I’m Amazed at The Knockdown Center: Opens October 30th 6 - 9:30pm

Reade Bryan, Chris Oh, Nicole Reber, and Matthew Speedy will show work in the haunted warehouse on the border of Bushwick and Queen, an exhibition and opening party complete with an indoor maze filled with circus peanuts, a séance with an 100 year old log and, of course, meat sculptures.

Lucien Smith's Macabre Suite: Thursday October 29th 9pm - late

Lucien Smith "Macabre Suite" Oct 29th in the South Bronx 9pm to 2am presented by @salon94

We haven’t heard from art darling Lucien Smith in a while. Yes, there have been speculations on the next step in his young career, but nothing concrete, just like this art party he’s throwing in an abandoned warehouse in the Bronx. Traversing a new neighborhood for the art crowd, we don’t know what to expect, but if nothing else, Macabre Suite is going to be different.
