[7th Day of GIFmas] A Swirling Holiday Rorschach Inkblot

Christmas has never been so mesmerizing.

The holidays are upon us and 2016 is nipping at our heels. The only decision harder than what gift to get your grandmother is what GIF to attach to inter-office emails and Slack threads. We've gathered some of the most festive GIF artists on the net for a series called 12 Days of GIFmas. We'll shine a red and green spotlight on the creative process behind these shareable bites of holiday cheer.

Israeli artist Ori Toor wears many GIF-making hats, but one of our favorites is his Looopism persona. He churns mesmerizing blobs of color like a witch's brew, and for his latest loop the ingredients are snowmen, fresh pine needles, and essence of Santa Claus himself. The mixture fills the eyes and mind with holiday cheer, and pairs well with snickerdoodles and eggnogg.

We asked Toor about his creative process and how he makes his eye-sticking loops.

Where did the idea for this GIF come from?

My work process is always improvised. Basically I had the Christmas theme and I knew I wanted to start working with symmetry. I started drawing all those blobs, slowly working them into Santa, Rudolf and the snowman. And of course trees. Always add trees.

Run me through the process of creating this piece. What tools/techniques did you use?

I used Flash and a small Wacom tablet to animate the GIF frame by frame. It's tedious but it really looks organic when it's done that way. When I finished I mirrored all the frames and played around with the colors for hours.

What kind of stuff do you have planned for the New Year?  How are you celebrating the holidays?

We just finished celebrating Hanukkah. I'm celebrating the fact that I totally managed to avoid all the donuts this holiday.
