A Cube Roams A Dystopian Earth In New CGI Animation

In "LLAPSE," from VFX animator Julien Vanhoenacker, a cube transcends the flood of human history.

It’s a difficult task to attempt to condense every element on planet Earth and in modern society into one CGI animation. But that didn't stop French artist Julien Vanhoenacker from trying.

Totaling just over two minutes, LLAPSE, a new animated short film written, directed, and animated by Vanhoenacker, purports to be "a visual metaphor of the positive and negative aspects of humanity, and its path on Earth." Revolving around an enormous cube suspended in mid-air, the graphics in the video morph into different shapes and elements, all while, from deserts and jungles to a stadium concert and amongst ruins where a woman with her child is set to be executed, teleporting to seemingly uncorrelated locations.

Fused and sequenced together in a manner that suggests the interconnectivity of all planetary happenings, nature or urban, the scenarios become morally challenging in its juxtaposition of an execution and a serene, expansive desert.

While the video certainly dwells on some of the more negative atrocities of Earth, with repeated metaphors of skulls, money signs, explosions, and so on, they're presented in an aesthetically elegant manner that almost neutralizes their obscenity. Perhaps a commentary on the eye of the modern human mind, or just a grand attempt at representing reality in CGI, LLAPSE will leave you overwhelmed, ponderous, even, but definitely visually and viscerally piqued.
