This DIY Kit Lets You Turn Any Object Into A Drone

Designer Jasper van Loenen has opened the floodgates for flying bicycle wheels, books, boards—and many other objects.

Watch out for flying bike wheels, books, and boogie boards. Jasper van Loenen's DIY (Drone it Yourself) v1.0 kit gives people the chance to transform any average object into a drone. And there's no technical know-how needed when it comes to these drones for dummies. Simply attach the four motors and control unit included in the kit to your desired object and you're ready for flight.

"The kit consists of multiple parts that are easy to assemble and can be attached to a wide range of different objects." says van Loenen. "For more advanced uses, you can take the original designs and alter the kit by making your own custom clamps or add-ons as needed."

The plastic parts are 3D printed and the kit comes in a handy metal suitcase so when you're carrying it around people will instantly know you're up to something. Then they definitely will when a flying bike wheel zooms past their head.

We've seen a lot of drone-based art and design in the past, but this is the first project that allows you to create a drone, out of practically anything, with very little technical skill needed. And it's also a great PR exercise for UAVs, turning them from semi-autonomous weapons into absurdist objects, from flying machines of war into a fun hobbyist activity you could enjoy down the park with your dad.
