A Massive Rainbow Mural Made Of 1,700 Colored Cartons

At this year’s Interpack trade fair, designers Gerlinde Gruber, Christine Strempel, and Matthäus Jiszda brought a spark to the Mayr-Melnhof Packaging stand. Comprised of twelve wooden boards, 1,700 cardboard boxes, and two stealthy action figures, their 52' x 78' mural provided a colorful reflection of our increasingly visual and consumer-centric culture. From afar, the chromatically-arranged products, interspersed with packaging pinwheels and action figures, bring to mind a map of a micro-urban sprawl. Upon closer inspection, however, the Kleenex hills, and valleys populated by Godzilla and King Kong remind us of the true goal of commercial packaging—entertaining the senses.
