Visitors to Shanghai Disney Resort will soon experience The Grid for real. A Tron-themed lightcycle roller coaster, along with Star Wars, and Marvel attractions, will be available when the park opens in spring 2016 Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced at an event earlier today.The park is designed to fuse classic Disney iconography with Chinese tradition, most evident in attractions like the Garden of the Twelve Friends, which reimagines the Chinese zodiac as Disney and Pixar characters. The New York Times reports that this effort is built on an agreement between Disney and Chinese officials that ensure Shanghai Disneyland becomes what Iger says is, “a truly magical place that is both authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese.”The 1.5 square mile, $5.5 billion park will be divided into six themed sections and have the "tallest, largest, and most interactive castle at any Disney theme park." Mickey Avenue acts as the new park's Main Street, and Gardens of Imagination and Fantasyland celebrate Disney classics with rides like the Fantasia Carousel and the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Adventure Isle is a haven of nature-themed attractions like Soaring Over the Horizon or the Roaring Rapids, and Treasure Cove is an entirely pirate-themed area. Tomorrowland is the sci-fi dream world that houses unique attractions like the character-focused Star Wars Launch Bay and Marvel Universe, as well as the TRON Lightcyle Power Run.There's no word yet on whether the Lightcycle Power Run will feature Daft Punk's award-winning Tron: Legacy soundtrack, but watching the demo footage while listening to interviews from our Daft Punk Random Access Memories: The Collaborators series is a strong alternative.
