An Emoji Ethnicity Update Might Happen Sooner Than We Expected

It's about time.

Yesterday, MTV Act posted an article about the lack of diversity in Emojis, by no means a new topic, yet writer Joey Parker decided to actually act on his disatisfaction. He reached out to Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, and within a day got a response from Katie Cotton, the vice president of worldwide corporate communications. Pretty awesome, if you ask us.

Below, Cotton's exclusive message:

“Tim forwarded your email to me. We agree with you. Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms. There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.”

While this is not a guarantee for Emoji progress, it is undoubtedly a step in the right direction. Hey, while we have their attention, maybe we should ask for other character updates—I know I could make use of snake, #facepalm, and make-it-rain (in cash) emojis. What else would you add to the deck?
