Animation Afternoon: Dance Through The City With A Shape-Shifting Robot

Watch her walk, wiggle, and turn into a geodesic caterpillar.

Walking City from Universal Everything

.

Artist Matt Pyke and his team at Universal Everything are known for giving a human touch to the computer generated--infusing personality into everything from anthropomorphic abstract forms to colorful gliders.

For their newest project Universal Everything has created a 3D robot flaneur, endlessly walking the city as she shifts, reshapes, and evolves into an entirely new sculpture-bot. Meant to reference the work of 1960’s avante-guard architectural group Archigram, the short above is meant to be a living video sculpture perpetually morphing before our eyes. We can easily image Frank Gehry crumpling up his paper in anger as he wonders why his dancing architecture doesn't also have these kinds of moves.

Above, watch as our robot friend…

…sets out on her journey.

…becomes well ventilated.

…grows cumbersome spikes.

…cast them off for more comfortable giant balloons.

…becomes one big giant balloon.

…begins to break out of her chrysalis.

…before turning into a dancing structure.

…and, finally, becoming a giant undulating geodesic form.
