Famous Architects Prove That Dollhouses Aren't Always Creepy

Some of the top names in design put a personalized spin on the slightly-spooky childhood toy.

There's something about dollhouses that make them inherently creepy in a sort of Chucky or Amityville Horror kind of way. Cathedral Group Plc, a property development group out of UK, is changing that perception, recently enlisting a group of twenty architects and designers to create their own dollhouses, each with a characteristic that would make life easier for a disabled child.

According to Dezeen, on November 11th, the architects will share and sell their constructions at an auction at Bonhams to support national charity KIDS with a goal of reaching £100,000.

Cathedral Group Plc was inspired by the structure built by Edwin Lutyens in 1922 for The British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, as he used a child's plaything to prove his own skills as an expert architect.

The participants for this project include dRMM, FAT Architecture, Zaha Hadid Architects and more -- each taking a quirky take on what constitutes a "dollhouse." See some of the entries below.

The above work is a collaboration between FAT and artist Grayson Perrry. It's an ode to Erno Goldfiner's Trellick Tower building.

Ok, so the one above is still a little creepy. The puzzle-like design was made by Make Architects and Studio Egret West. While we don't see how it can exactly help disabled children, it certainly catches the eye.

The full list of participants include: Adjaye Associates, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, AMODELS, Coffey Architects, Dexter Moren, DRDH Architects, dRMM, Duggan Morris Architects, FAT Architecture, Glenn Howells Architects, Guy Hollaway Architects, HLM Architects, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, mae, Make Architects, Morag Myerscough & Luke Morgan, James Ramsey RAAD Studio with Lara Apponyi, shedkm, Studio Egret West and Zaha Hadid Architects.
