Artist Plants a Red Flower Tower in the Sea

Azuma Makoto takes his 'In Bloom' series to the sea.

Tied to a wooden raft used by local fisherman, a four-meter-tall tower of 10,000 flaming red Heliconia flowers is set afloat into the Hinoba-an Sea, Negros Island in the Philippines. Another installation by flower artist Azuma Makoto's, In Bloom #2 DAGAT&BULAKLAK forms the second edition of his In Bloom series, which sees the artist install floral sculptures into environments where "nature does not allow them to exist." Previously, he sent a bonsai tree into space and froze bouquets in ice for another series.

"With nothing blocked the harsh sunlight, blown by salted water, the sculpture of flowers quietly floated in the cobalt blue ocean," Makoto explains on his site. "The ocean accounts 70% of the surface of the earth, and therefore it created magnificent stage for the project."
