Augmented Reality in 3D -- Real Life Just Got Real

Director Keiichi Matsuda’s envisions a (hyper) reality at London’s 3D Film Festival.

“The architecture of the contemporary city is no longer simply about the physical space of buildings and landscape,” says director Keiichi Matsuda. “More and more it is about the synthetic spaces created by digital information that we collect, consume and organize; an immersive interface may become as much part of the world we inhabit as the buildings around us.”

Everyone is speculating about how augmented reality will begin to infiltrate and enhance the physical world, but Matsuda did it better than anyone. He speculated in 3D. While the above clip is best watched with 3D glasses, you can still get the gist of it in blurry 2.5D and, in fact, watching it sans glasses lends the film a certain delirious quality that actually suits the film quite nicely.

In Matsuda’s version of the future, we are constantly surrounded by data and information. It’s a world that we can customize at will—changing our surroundings and experiences to suit our preference—but somehow that customization seems isolating. It also appears to be a world where privacy is no longer a matter of concern or importance, as everyone can see your screens and all your personal data trailing behind you like some sort of demented tail.

We’re not sure if this is the kind of future we could see ourselves living in—for one thing, that’s a lot of pointing, we think our arms would get tired. Then again, maybe we just need to find a pair of 3D glasses.
