Augmented Reality Project Turn Billboards Into Art

Artists have been rebelling against commercial advertisement in public space for as long as big business has inhabited it. The latest weapon in that battle comes in the form of this new augmented reality software.

Artists have been rebelling against commercial advertisement in public space for as long as big business has been crowding our skylines and roadsides with fast foods, unattainable bodies, and products we don’t need. The Artvertiser, a new augmented reality software from Julian Oliver and Damian Stewart, is the latest progression in that artistic protest, utilizing custom built augmented reality technology to substitute billboards for art (or whatever else you might want) in real-time. The software is available for both Windows and OS X operating systems, so all you need to realize your guerrilla artvertising dreams is a computer, and some nice, highly visible and centrally located billboard space that’s just begging to be turned into an impromptu exhibition. To get trained up, get the software and read this instructional, then check out the project site here where you’ll also find an explanatory video that will walk you through the set-up process. Before you know it, you’ll be ready to start your campaign against those blights on our modern landscapes. Go forth and art up the world.

See the Artvertiser in action at this year’s Transmediale festival in Berlin in the video above. Festival participants were led on a walking city tour, armed with some digital binoculars, to experience an alternate, much more colorful, view of the cityscape.
