Frequency - 11 Years and 1 Second of a Reverberation (above)is the latest piece from Turkish artist Refik Anadol and architect Alper Derinbogaz. It's part of their ongoing project Augmented Structures, a multidisciplinary exploration of architectureFrequency - 11 Years and 1 Second of a Reverberation is a sculptural piece that marries the digital and physical worlds. "I decided to experiment with physical/virtual connections through using parametric tools such as architects are intentionally using to create/design space." Anadol explains.Frequency - 11 Years and 1 Second of a ReverberationThe result is a triptych of works that fuse the natural world with computational design. "The idea was experimenting with wave phenomena and vibration through space and time perception." Anadol says. "In order to achieve this, I used an 11 year old hardwood 'rain tree' which is one of the special organisms that collects time data in its own structure and then I applied 'cymatics' rules by milling with a CNC router. The algorithm was developed in Rhino/Grasshopper."Frequency - 11 Years and 1 Second of a ReverberationAn earlier work in the series was Augmented Structures v2.0, an installation that takes two regions in Istanbul and reveals their unseen characteristics through soundscapes and data mapping. The duo showed how an urban environment could be presented in an unfamiliar way that distills the architecture into a dynamic audiovisual display, revealing "the invisible information about their context and suggest [ing] an alternative way to understand the existence of urbanization through new media technologies."Check it out below.@stewart23rd
