Awesome Video Game Mashup Performed On Hacked Video Game Controllers

It’s got Sonic, it’s got Mario, it’s got Bowie—it’s got all you need.

Mario emerging from a pipe, Ryu taking down Blanka with a hadouken, Doctor Who, Tetris, GoldenEye 007, the iconic NES controller, and David Bowie. These things and more feature in a 19 track live performance played out on repurposed game controllers in Game Theory from UK-based sound studio Ithaca Audio.

The mashup weaves together video game snippets and pop music in what the company describe as “a look back at 35 years of video game music (Space Invaders, released in 1978 was the first game to have a continuous soundtrack)”.

Replying to a YouTube commenter the company describe how they created instruments out of the hacked controllers: “[We] re-wired to convert them into HID compliant USB controllers, then we programmed a small application to convert the HID signals into MIDI to control the performance software.” So that’s how that works.
