Back to the Future Shoes for You

Marty McFly’s automatic lacing system brought to life.

As you’re probably aware, we’re into fashion utilizing technology here on The Creators Project. And here’s a great example of that combined with a childish excitement that we always feel when real life becomes more like the movies. You know, life imitating art imitating life, imitating a Robert Zemeckis movie. And one of those movies that we’ve all been waiting—still waiting—and longing to "come true" is Back to the Future Part II. Some of what they predicted was kind of accurate: the augmented reality-type device that Doc Brown uses for one, but in terms of the really cool stuff like hoverboards, a food hydrator, flying cars, and the Nike Air Mag that has automatic lacing; our enthusiastic hoping has only been met by bitter disappointment so far. Until now, that is. Over at the World Intellectual Property Organization website Tiffany Beers, Michael Friton, and Tinker Hatfield are listed as inventors in an application Nike International Ltd have filed for a patent on an automatic lacing system, click through the slideshow above to have a look at the design. Here’s what the abstract says:

“An article of footwear with an automatic lacing system is disclosed. The automatic lacing system provides a set of straps that can be automatically opened and closed to switch between a loosened and tightened position of the upper. The article further includes an automatic ankle cinching system that is configured to automatically adjust an ankle portion of the upper.”

So Marty McFly's futuristic footwear could be with us by 2015? Great Scott, indeed.
