From Gaudí To Gaudy: Would You Stay In Barcelona's "Space Hotel"?

A new hotel proposed off the coast of Barcelona is causing some controversy.

The Mobilona Space Hotel

The city of Barcelona isn't shy of a few famous buildings. It's home to most of Gaudí's back catalogue as well as the Gothic Quarter that pulls in tourists like moths to a particularly labyrinthine flame. But even they may pale as an attraction to the might of a "space hotel" situated off the coast of the city. This is what's being proposed in the latest addition to wacky hotels that sound like where a Bond villian might vacation. A previous example is the proposed underwater hotel in Dubai.

This latest hotel is designed by Catalan architect Erik Morvan and comes from developer Mobilona. "Barcelona Island will be an out of this world experience for all guests of ‘Mobilona Space Hotel’ who wish they could travel to distant galaxies." the company's site proclaims. So what does that mean? Well it means that you get a zero gravity spa, 24 hour "space mall" (whatever that is), and a Space Auditorium where you can view distant galaxies in five star luxury—all rising 984 feet from the sea on manmade Barcelona Island. However, Barcelona officials have other ideas and see it as a giant eyesore that isn't quite the aesthetic they want for the city. Let battle commence.

This isn't the only space-related work Mobilona are conducting. They're also looking for "outstanding women and men of all ages to represent the human race" and become Space Ambassadors. These ambassadors will record a "visual message" which will be sent into space to seek out our closest earth-like planets and see if aliens are up there waiting. You can actually apply for that online right now.
