Beat Makers Commemorate J Dilla With Beats

Disciples of the influential producer remix his greatest works.

No producer is paid nearly as much tribute by the global beat making community as the late, great J Dilla—and this outpouring of love isn’t just because he died before his time. Once known as Jay Dee, Dilla produced monumental hip hop tracks—game changers like De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High,” Busta Rhymes’ “Woo-Ha!,” and The Roots’ “Dynamite,” among countless others before producing his final album, Donuts. It was this instrumental album, released on his 32nd birthday and just three days before his death in 2006, that spread his influence to kids all over the world, prompting everyone with an MPC to recreate his techniques.

The collection of remixes and tribute tracks below drops just in time for the sixth anniversary of Dilla’s passing, and features producers who have carried his techniques into a new decade and a new era of beat production, augmenting it with every release. The stuttery beats, side-chaining, kicks so low they’re nearly inaudible, snares so sharp they hurt a little, and impecable sample cutting are all present on DO THE DILLA 2012. Dibia$e, Elaquent, Lefto, Ta-Ku, and a dozen other Dilla-holics have a go at recutting the man’s originals, as well as his productions for A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, and De La Soul.
