Friendly Monsters Are Hiding in Your Beer Foam

Graphic designer Élise Speicher has found something far more interesting than conversation while on Tinder dates.

It's sad, but many first dates are reduced to furtive glances and awkward conversations, almost always accompanied by alcohol and a vain hope to overcome this moment of tension and move onto more interesting topics. Clearly Élise Speicher was more seduced more by her glass of beer than a recent Tinder match, because after their meeting came the project, Beer Monsters.

Instead of looking into a prospective mate's eyes, she discovered a myriad of characters in her glass and decided to turn them into art. These images that arise from the subconscious—or, creative drunkenness—are the result of something called pareidolia, the same psychological phenomenon that causes us see faces or animals in clouds.

Graphic designer and hedonist, Speicher drinks as much for the beauty of the gesture as for her taste for beer. Meetups have thus taken on an artistic dimension that has become an ode to simpler pleasures: alcohol, company, and pen strokes. She gives forms that are far from boring to boring dates.

Below, check out a few of her results:
