Being Twins with Aphex Twin

Live face-mapping with Aphex Twin.

Aphex Twin, a.k.a. Richard D. James, the man who back in 1996 was king of the electronic freaks and is a label mate to Mira Calix over at Warp Records, played the London Electronic Dance festival this weekend, along with a host of other acts including fellow 90s dance music faves Leftfield. Richard James’s set was a storming success by all accounts, but along with the brain-electrifying music was an unusual, and slightly unsettling, choice of visuals created by Weirdcore, who’s worked with Cassette Playa, Simian Mobile Disco, and M.I.A.. Namely, using live facemapping technology to turn the audience into Aphex Twin. You know the face, that deranged grinning head manically staring back at you from the cover of the Richard D. James Album. Let’s hope it didn’t terrify too many fragile minds.
