Starting next month, commuters in Zwolle will enjoy a range of artworks—including a panoramic video installation-—as they travel to and from their central station. Zwolle station is a major commuter hub in the Netherlands and the panoramic video wall will be permanently installed in the station’s tunnel, while a series of sculptures dealing with themes of time, flux and orientation will be located along the route from the station to the city center. This ambitious project, titled Portal, was created for the city by three artists, Ram Katzir, and the duo Hertog Nadler.

The tunnel’s video installation will make its debut on January 23rd, and is described as a "continually changing tableau vivant” without beginning or an end. The video was shot in Zwolle with the collaboration of 500 locals, and will recreate scenes from the city over the course of its long history and imagined future. In addition to the video, a beautiful bronze blue line will lead visitors from the station towards the city center, presenting a series of new sculptures. One is a giant bronze relief depicting the city over the course of different eras, from prehistoric times to its current realization via Google Maps. Other sculptures are audio-based, inviting visitors to listen to various stories of the city. So if you’re in the Netherlands, expect to be wowed on your next rail journey to Zwolle.
