Résonances, peau de lumière interactive sur les Turbulences – Frac Centre

Les Turbulences, Frac Centre est le fruit de la collaboration dès le concours d’architecture entre duo d’artistes Naziha Mestaoui & Yacine Aït Kaci, alias Electronic Shadow,  et les architectes Jakob & Mac Farlane. Le processus de déformation des trames architecturales des bâtiments historiques a donné sa forme au nouveau FRAC faisant apparaître une volumétrie en facette dans la cour des anciennes subsistances militaires. Ces  « Tubulences » deviennent mouvantes, tel un être mi-organique mi-minéral, qui respirerait en couleurs. L’intervention artistique prend la forme d’une peau d’information qui fusionne avec l’architecture afin de lui donner une dimension temporelle. A partir de cette relation que nous explorée sans cesse par les artistes, entre la matière physique et l’immatériel, l’intervention prend la forme d’images en volume à partir de la lumière comme une série de résonances avec le bâtiment. Ces différentes « résonances » sont liées à la structure des Turbulences et agissent sur l’architecture pour la construire, la déconstruire, la métamorphoser afin de prolonger le travail architectural physique vers l’immatériel. Le volume, la lumière et l’image fusionnent pour créer une forme dynamique d’architecture de l’information. La lumière court sur le bâtiment et redessine les lignes qui n’avaient été au départ que du crayon sur un papier, le dessin prends corps par la lumière et fait apparaître la matière. Du point à la ligne jusqu’à la surface, le bâtiment devient une image en soi. Il devient ainsi un organisme vivant, connecté en temps réel à une série d’informations qui métamorphosent sa structure en fonction du taux d’humidité de l’air, de la direction du vent, de la qualité de l’air…

Les Turbulences, the newest project by design team Jakob + MacFarlane, is one of the few "morphing" buildings currently on permanent display. Created as part of the new FRAC Center in Orleans, France, a "graft" was introduced on the existing building, introducing an interactivity with its urban environment activated by a “skin of light” on the Turbulences. A collaboration with artists’ duo Electronic Shadow (Naziha Mestaoui and Yacine Aït Kaci), Turbulences consists of a facade of light made of several thousand diodes, creating a dynamic interface between the building and its surroundings. Using the natural construction lines of the Turbulences, various points of light become a pastiche of shapes: passing from point to line, line to surface, surface to volume, and volume to image.

This interactive skin of light is able to function in real time, responding with corresponding patterns to sunrises and sunsets, wind, and other variables.  
 
The building’s surface is mostly informed by flows of information, directly transforming them into light-images. The result of a computer program, The Turbulences is at the forefront of the “immaterial architecture” technological revolution. In other words, buildings that can shift and change according to the surrounding climate.

Faceted aluminum cladding gives the building a chic, futuristic look during the day that at night turns to a light spectacular.
