Augmented sound immersive gaming with Dimensions – Adventures in the Multiverse, Rafaël Rozendaal’s new art app, Grand Theft Auto 3 comes to smartphones, and the blues and Dickens become interactive comics.

The app stores are teeming with new releases, but who has time to go through them all? We do. Bringing you a selection of the most interesting, creative, and innovative apps each week. Submit your suggestions for next week in the comments below.

Dimensions – Adventures in the Multiverse [iPhone, iPod touch and iPad]

If you experienced the

Inception

app released last year by RjDj, which augmented your surroundings by pulling noises from your environment and turning them into an acoustic wonderland through your headphones, then you already know what you’re in store for. This interactive music app uses similar gaming mechanisms while “using your reality as the interface”. Much like the

Inception

app, it uses cues from your environment to create an immersive gaming world where you have to unlock and infiltrate new Dimensions and collect Artifacts while fighting off the Nephilim.

Towards and Beyond [iPhone, iPod touch and iPad]

The

web

version of this app from

Rafaël Rozendaal

lets you navigate chromatic corridors of bright colors, journeying through this color-blocked abstract environment by double-clicking on where you want to go. Usually Rozendaal sells these websites, called “neens”, as individual artworks, giving the buyer the domain name as a sign of “acquisition”. This is his preview of the app version of that site, which seems to work on the same principles, laying further claim to the idea that app art is the new net art. Maybe.

Grand Theft Auto 3 [iPhone, iPod touch and iPad Android]
Did you know that Grand Theft Auto 3 is 10 years old? It just goes to show how far computing’s come that a decade ago you needed a console’s worth of power to play this game, and now a small portable device can run it. Take a trip down gaming memory lane with the action taking place in Liberty City—go ahead and steal that car with your girlfriend (who you’ve just robbed a bank with) only to have her shoot you and leave you for dead. And so begins your violent journey…

The Blues [iPhone, iPod touch and iPad]
If you wanted to know the story of the blues but missed Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: A Musical Journey (or simply can’t be bothered to watch an entire PBS series), then this interactive comic is the perfect shortcut to the story behind this massively influential music genre. From the Mississippi Delta to juke joints, cotton plantations, and the Great Migration north to Chicago, it takes in Robert Johnson and Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and The Rolling Stones. And all the while it’s singing and dancing with music and sound effects.

Dark London [iPhone, iPod touch and iPad]
More comics! This one’s an illustrated guide to the London of Charles Dickens but one that was informed by the darker side of Victorian life, letting you follow Dickens on his nighttime walks where he’d get inspiration for his stories. Illustrated by David Foldvari, they’ll be publishing a new story each month and all editions of the app will be brought together on an 1862 map of London overlaid on a modern map, allowing users to compare the two.
