Drawing on her own experiences living in Europe and China, artist Yang Liu condenses some differences between East and West down to simple pictographic form in a new Taschen artbook, East Meets West.Born in Beijing, Liu grew up in Berlin and went to university in Bristol, UK then moved back to Berlin to establish her studio, Yang Liu Design. Since 2010, Liu has been the head of the department of communications design at the Berlin Technical Art University. She works internationally designing posters, books, and brand logos.

In her latest book, the pages are divided by language and color to convey cultural attitudes from networking to animals. Risking major over-simplification, the “pictograms convey the obvious and sometimes not so obvious discrepancies in life on opposite sides of the globe.” Already popular on social media, the book joins its predecessor Man meets Woman in trying to deal with the difficult questions of difference in a light-hearted, humorous way.
