Coming Soon? The Hunter S. Thompson Museum

Looks like we'll be planning a road trip.

Even in death, Hunter S. Thompson is still wreaking havoc. That much was evident in 2006 when, as per his request, his ashes were exploded over the desert in a fireworks display over the heads of an inner circle whose ranks included Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, and Senator John Kerry. Now, the halls of Thompson's former Colorado farm house known as the Owl Farm will reportedly become a museum dedicated to life and work of the Gonzo journalism pioneer. Preserved by his widow, Anita Thompson, in state they were in at time of Thompson's tragic death, we can only guess (and hope) that the farm's rooms are overrun with hats and spare TarGard cigarette holders, giving Fear and Loathing fans and aspiring attorneys a gateway past the gold-tinted aviators to the unspoken stories within.

The proposal—as of yet undisclosed in full detail—is to be spearheaded by Anita, who commented on the commemorative remodel of her home to The Cannabist at a National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws barbecue last Sunday. Thompson explained, “That’s why these rooms have remained the way Hunter left them. At first it brought me comfort, and then over the last few years, I’ve kept it this way simply because it is history. I want others to experience it.” Looks like we'll be planning a road trip.
