This Sculpture Is Controlled By Your Memories

Red Paper Heart reimagines the art of storytelling with "Remember Your Rose," a unique mind-activated installation.

“Only the children know what they are looking for.” -  Antoine de Saint-Exupéry,The Little Prince

Created for the Future of Storytelling Conference by the interactive art studio Red Paper Heart, Remember is a typographic installation that draws participants into a state of child-like wonder.

Here's how it works - interested viewers don a NeuroSky headset (which measures brain waves), and by concentrating and focusing their mind through picturing the rose from the Little Prince, pieces of letters come together to create the word ‘rose’. Essentially, by using the power of their mind and tapping into the power of imagination, they control the outcome of this interactive experience.

"Remember allows you to step inside a story and use your imagination for surprising results," says the project's tech director Daniel Scheibel."Inspired by classic wooden push toys and the central message of the children’s story The Little Prince, this installation responds when adults think like kids again. This project capitalizes on a moment of wonder that’s often lost in adulthood; that what you imagine can form something real."

For those curious about the more technical aspects, Remember is a combination of physical computing, typography, design, engineering, and coding. To power the project, an Arduino application monitors a central servo motor that responds to fluctuations of brain activity measured by a MindWave device. Monitoring the brain data, the servo translates this into string tension and uses this to affect the way the piece operates and moves.
