Cookie Monster Covers Tom Waits, Other Musicians Cover Muppets

The gravelly-voiced crooner’s bleak song “God’s Away On Business” is sung by the gravelly-voiced Muppet. Plus, The Green Album on NPR.

This is one of those mind=blown moments. Now that the vocal similarity has been pointed out, you won’t be able to hear another Tom Waits record without seeing that cross-eyed Muppet bobbing about anarchically chomping on cookies, while espousing “nom” and booming inanities in his deep voice.

So, above is Tom Wait’s “God’s Away On Business” as performed by Cookie Monster. Not the sort of song you’d normally expect to find on a children’s show like Sesame Street, but a perfect fit nonetheless. Vocally speaking, of course. Maybe Tom Waits should release a cover version of Cookie Monster’s song “C Is For Cookie” (below) on his next album? Or maybe someone would like to mashup some Tom Waits footage to accompany the song instead?

In related Muppets music news, we’re anxiously awaiting the release of the much hyped The Green Album, featuring musicians like OK Go, Weezer, The Fray and My Morning Jacket performing classic Muppets songs. In the meantime, you can listen to the whole album over on NPR’s site. Sadly, no tracks from Waits though. Maybe for Vol. 2?
