Creators Remix Roundup: Matthew Herbert, Boys Noize, Jamie xx, Diplo

Jamie xx adds atmosphere to some R&B, Chromeo funkifies Boys Noize, and Matthew Herbert collabs with Hejira.

Our Creators are a talented and prolific bunch, and our inbox is always overflowing with alerts of new remixes and mashups from the incredible DJs and producers in our line-up. We just couldn't keep these fresh new tunes to ourselves because, after all, filesharing is caring. Here are our top picks from the past week. For past Creators Remix Roundups, click here.

Boys Noize: “What You Want” (Chromeo Remix)

Our favorite Canadian duo turns up the funk once again. Chromeo puts their spin on one of our other DJ+Creator powerhouses, Boys Noize. Though they each have their own distinct electronic music styles, the combination of the two is like mixing rainbows and chocolate chip cookies—you just can’t go wrong. Chromeo’s electrofunk synths add just the right amount of contrast to Boys Noize’s booming techno riffs in “What You Want,” off his third LP, Out Of The Black. Try to sit still in your chair while listening, we dare you.

Alicia Keys: “When It’s All Over” Produced by ( Jamie xx)

When it comes to smooth, soulful jams, R&B queen Alicia Keys never seems to disappoint. This week, she is releasing her fifth studio album, Girl On Fire and has brought in some diverse and unexpected artists to collaborate with, one of which is the UK’s own experimental production whiz, Jamie xx). Sprinkling in his signature touches of atmospheric, swirling electronica—the combination of Alicia’s voice and Jamie’s finishing touches makes for one smooth tune all over for “When It’s All Over.”

Hejira: “Gypsy of The Soul” (Matthew Herbert remix)

Sparse electronic newcomers Hejira have a sort of rusty, moody sound with Dirty Projectors-style boy and girl singers. Creator Matthew Herbert has decided to take this "delicate orchestration," as he calls it, and turn it on it's ear, releasing this industrial, almost Krautrock-like remix. The hypnotic track belongs in the trailer for a smart action Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy-type movie. Get on it, Hollywood.

The Prodigy: “Smack my Bitch Up” (Major Lazer Remix)

In advance of the reissue of The Prodigy’s landmark techno album The Fat of the Land, the band have announced a special remix EP The Added Fat. They also released this remix of their controversial 1997 hit “Smack my Bitch Up” by Diplo‘s side-project Major Lazer. The original (and it’s controversial music video) remains in tact for about the first minute, then Major Lazer starts to have some fun and play around with synths and brash beats.

CREATOR BONUS VIDEO

I was obsessed with this movie Radioland Murders when I was younger. As you might guess, it’s about a murderer at an old-timey radio station. And of course you got to see all of the workers at the radio station: the announcer, the drunk old lady organist, and of course the sound effects man. If there was a head getting smashed on the radio, it was actually Lloyd attacking a watermelon with a sledge hammer, etc. Nodding to those sound effect superstars, the folks from Fool's Gold have released a short video with Converse Rubber Tracks, in which we watch them traipse around to Brooklyn staples Crest Hardware, Post Bikes, and the Meat Hook recording sounds from a pig squeal to a bicycle pump. Plus, you can head over to Indaba Music’s website and use the sounds the collected to mix your own track.
