Daito Manabe Uses Kinect And A Robotic Arm To Create 3D Wire Sculpture

Mechanical arm becomes an abstract sculptor.

Daito Manabe and Motoi Ishibashi are artists and engineers who combine their skills to produce hybrid human-machine artworks that have given us such wild futuristic inventions as a robot arm DJ and turning human faces into twitchy drum machines.

Just recently, the duo used two Kinects and a robotic arm to create a wire 3D sculpture of Manabe in this brand new piece, titled line. The Kinect sensors capture Manabe in a pose standing on one leg, then process the image into a linear representation using custom software. Then this single line image is bent into form by the robot arm, transforming his pose into a 3D abstract sculpture.
