The Art of Building international architecture photography competition just released its shortlist and opened polls to the public yesterday. After receiving thousands of submissions from photographers all over the world, professional and amateur alike, the judges selected the 15 photographers in the running for the €3,000 (roughly $3,700) prize. Hosted by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) the competition aims to showcase the “very best digital photography of the built environment.”

This year's stunning shortlist ranges from Vietnamese photographer Hoang Long Ly's beautiful and saturated Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi to Indian photographer Rajaram's imagery of women burning bricks in Pondicherry, India.

The judges' panel included Sue Steward, a photography critic, Matt Wain, a photographer and Elaine Knutt, a magazine editor, with the criteria ranging from context and relevancy, through composition, focus, lighting, creativity, alignment with CIOB values, and how the summary of the piece related to the image. All the while, they were seeking work that could "inspire the public with the very real art of construction going on in the urban world around us.”

Submissions were divided into categories including “Building Inspiration,” that focuses on the architecture itself, “Between People and Buildings,” which featured images that explore the relationships between people and buildings, “Creative Visions,” which catered to the imagination, “Smartphone/ Tablet,” photographs taken on mobile devices, and “Young Photographer of the Year,” for shutterbugs between the age of 18-25.
