Don't Touch the Beehive Sculpture at MoMA

The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden is literally buzzing with Pierre Huyghe's 'Untilled (Liegender Frauenakt).'

A cast concrete sculpture of a woman reclining with a live beehive atop her head is getting people buzzing at MoMA. Known as Untilled (Liegender Frauenakt) the recently-acquired Pierre Huyghe sculpture, which is on view at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden from June 16th to mid August 2015, aims to explore the symbiotic relationship between humans and honeybees. Her brain is said to emphasize the collective thought processes of bee’s and their “hive mentality.”  In building their hive, the Italian honeybees present continue the growth and expansion of the sculpture.

This is the first of Huyghe’s works to enter into MoMA’s collection. Untilled, however, has previously been presented at the Center George Pompidou and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where it's been a resounding success. And don’t worry: no bees were harmed in the making of this sculpture, either, thanks to beekeeping services provided by New York City's pioneer beekeeper Andrew Cote of Andrews Honey.
