The video game industry has made an unbelievable amount of progress in the past few decades. In fact, the industry might be the most prolific example of the technological possibilities brought on by the digital era. In our new five-part series exploring the creative process behind some of today’s most popular video games, co-developed with leading game magazine, Kill Screen, founder Jamin Warren takes us on an exploration of the fascinating new games that are pushing the industry towards a future that only science-fiction writers could have predicted.

In this first episode, we visit the Frankfurt-based video game company, Crytek, where developers of Crysis 3 are attempting to break the boundary between gaming and cinema, blending the two mediums into what Warren calls, “the new cinema.”

Crysis 3 is the third release in a series of hyper-realistic first-person shooters. Set in what looks to be a post-apocalyptic New York City, the gaming landscape, created with Crytek’s own game development engine, Cryengine 3, is teeming with vast expanses of vegetation, sprouting between the cracks of unsettling urban ruins. Crytek’s Director of Creative Development, Rasmus Hojengaard, gives us an insider’s look at the game’s creative development, showing us how this dichotomous environment provides developers with ample space to master the detail-intensive techniques that have been evolving since the Crysis series began in 2007.

With space for developers to take artistic liberties, Hojengaard explains, such as the space brought on by Crysis 3’s dynamic setting, the possibilites to expand realistic imagery to include techniques found in modern cinema become endless. It is through these cinematic possibilities that the Crytek team is beginning to lay the foundations for a new medium entirely.

Watch the video above to see how Hojengaard and other Crytek developers are taking advantage of these new possibilites, and check back soon for the next episode in our Kill Screen series, going behind the scenes of Dance Central 3.
