[Exclusive] KAWS' First UK Museum Show Is Massive

Something's different about Mickey Mouse… In the works of KAWS, Disney's dopey hero looks grave, not least because his trademarked top has been replaced with a more skeletal visage, the crossed-out bone cranium for which the artist is internationally renowned. Now, inside their Longside Gallery and open air, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) puts on display over 20 works by the American artist, among them aluminum and wood sculptures, painted canvases, and a series of original works made exclusively for this, the artist's first museum exhibition in the UK.

Today, you can check out a few of those works, KAWS' SURVIVAL MACHINE, 2015 series, exclusively on The Creators Project. "KAWS absorbs popular imagery to produce works that are semi-familiar, with layers of contradictions and subtleties," YSP explains. "Outdoors, with their outsize and monumental proportions, KAWS’s sculptures bring to mind dystopian cartoon characters; recognizable personalities from childhood who appear to have lost their innocence." Warped and world-weary, his works push today's mythological figures into the soul-grinder that is Pop culture with reckless abandon, then force them to stand straight for judgment.
