Ferrofluid + Dye + Soap Bubbles = Surprisingly Creepy But Awesome Short Film

Creating an eerie narrative from unusual components.

Here’s proof that all you need to make a successful video that racks up over 80,000 hits on Vimeo in two days is a little bit of ingenuity. And maybe some soap bubbles, ferrofluid, food coloring, and magnets. Mix them all together and you have the video above called Compressed 02 from Kim Pimmel. Filmed with a macro lens using the time-lapse technique, it’s an abstract, mysterious and slightly creepy video that follows the black ferrofluid and dye as they race through the bubble structures, spurred on by the “invisible forces of capillary action and magnetism.” As all great film narratives are.

If you think the methodical climb of ferrofluid arching through bubbles is a great minute and a half’s worth of viewing, then you can see part one in the series below. This alien imagery was created by filming magnet-attracted printer toner particles, which are floating on the surface of water.
