Furniture Designer Seung Yong Song Creates Your Perfect Hideaway

This designer marries fun and functional in his whimsical furniture designs.

Remember pitching a blanket-tent inside your closet as a kid? Driven by the impulse to create your own "private hideaway" from which to plot mischief, or to quietly shed a few frustrated tears after mischief gone wrong, we’ve always been drawn to quiet little alcoves of solitude where we could go to disappear and escape the rest of the world. Industrial designer Seung Yong Song's playful and fully-functional furniture designs evoke the special privacy and freedom of a child's secret cave.

A lantern-like globular structure made of wire and traditional Korean paper (hanji) forms a cocoon over an otherwise basic wooden chair, bathing the sitter in a warm glow of soft light and utter solitude.

Literally a love nest for two, "Salangbang," Korean for “love room,” is all clean lines of wood and hanji, at once modern and traditional-looking. It’s also convertible as a private space for one or for a very cozy two. Any way you look at it, it’s exceedingly romantic and an efficient use of space.
