Philadelphia Hates Game of Thrones | Insta of the Week

Then again, maybe HBO needs to up its projection mapping game.

Winter is still coming in Westeros, despite the sunny blue skies we're enjoying in New York. Still, Philadelphia seems to be closer in temperature to the fictional continent in Game of Thrones, based on the cold shoulder locals gave a giant dragon projected onto City Hall at the Season 5 DVD launch on Wednesday. In the below Instagram videos, you can see people oohing and ahhing at the mythicaly beast's flaming breath, before a strange moment where the crowd turns against it—much like the conflicted Khaleesi turned against her draconian children, Rhaegal and Viserion. A nearby subject of the video sums it up nicely, saying, “Philly is a tough crowd! Hard to please.”

To be fair, the projection is somewhat underwhelming compared to the biggest dragon in the history of the series we saw during the Season 5 finale, and other projection mapping projects such as Adrien M. and Claire B.'s Hakanaï. Maybe it's because Philadelphia itself is no stranger to amazing projection mapping—the Philadelphia-based Klip Collective were some of the first to experiment with projection mapping using Adobe After Effects 1.0 and VHS.

With any luck, HBO will up their projection mapping game before heading back to the City of Brotherly Love. If it looks anything like the video below, then everybody wins.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24, 2016.
