World Smile Day was created by Harvey Ball, who designed behind the ubiquitous smiley face symbol in 1963. Three-and-a-half decades later, he felt his creation became too over-saturated and commercialized for his taste. Ball died in 2001, two years after inaugurating the holiday, but many GIF artists have picked up where he left off. The upwards curve of a simple smile shows up in a multitude of GIFs, from reaction GIFs clipped from pop culture to unique and personal animated artworks.
