GIFography: Explore A Map Of GIF Artists All Over The World

78 artist from 19 different countries are represented, and this is only the beginning of GIF-ography.

GIFs are really global now. Well, not much more than before, but Alessandro Scali—who previously allowed us to bring GIFs anywhere with the Giphoscope—made a public Google Map based on @giphy artists list that gives visitors an easy way to see the glitchy, DIY animations from creatives all over the world. Explore the animation: here.

From Haydiroket in Turkey toMike + Claire in New York (old favorites of The Creators Project), the map is the step in the right direction for categorizing and archiving the various individuals working in a medium that's only beginning to get recognized as an art medium. The map by no means represents the whole GIF community, and many names are missing, but as Scali notes, "it's a first step."

The map includes 78 artists from 19 different countries, which probably doesn't even scratch the surface of the amount of GIF tinkerers out there. Scalia added some extra data about his findings:

"Some numbers: according to Giphy's Artists List, more than 50% of the GIF artists come from US (41), and 18 from NY. 10 artists come from UK (6 from London). There’s an interesting group of artists come from East Europe, 8 in total (Croatia, Romania, Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, Slovakia). South America is represented by Argentina and Guatemala. Italy has just one, and it’s our OKKULT Motion Pictures. Surprisingly, no artists from Africa, China, Japan, France etc."

The following is a GIF of this GIF map. The meta-ness is making our head hurt:

So the start of GIF-ography begins. If you want to add to this map or notice any mistakes you can write to Scalia at lssndrscl@gmail.com or info@okkul.lt and see his site for more.
