Gravity And Magnets Produce Freakish, Stunning-Looking Stools

An interesting production technique is used to create these melting stools.

When thinking about how a stool might be designed you don’t typically consider magnetic fields as part of the process. Why would you? You’re not Jólan van der Wiel, a young designer who’s used magnets in combination with gravity to produce his Gravity Stools, part of his graduation project at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.

Van der Wiel created a machine that uses opposing magnetic fields to create jagged, organic shapes from a mixture that consists of plastic and iron, essentially letting gravity do all the work for him. The results look like something from one of Robert Seidel’s experimental films.
