One is the prince of darkness, the Pale Emperor, corruptor of innocent youth, industrial metal deity, champion of critical thinking and flouter of authority. The other is beloved by children and parents alike, an upright member of society at large, a brilliant and subtle animator, and has earned the genial nickname "The Walt Disney of Japan." Marilyn Manson and Hayao Miyazaki couldn't be more different on the surface, but the two creative juggernauts do have one thing in common—today is their birthday. It's also Bradley Cooper's, Deadmau5's and January Jones', but let's not get distracted.Miyazaki turns 75 today, and Marilyn Manson turns 46. These two greats have touched our lives in countless ways. The semi-retired king of Japanese animation built the worlds we played in as kids and continues to capture the imagination and bolster childlike wonder as an adult. The self-crowned "God of Fuck" taught us that it was ok to think for ourselves, and remains a stalwart example of how to be a functioning cultural pariah with dignity. The former revolutionized the craft of animation and firmly ensconsed Japanese animation in the mainstream.
