Here's How To Paint In Virtual Reality

With the "Tilt Brush" virtual reality painting app, light painting just got a whole lot more 3D.

It seems like so long ago that we were honing our computer skills using the spray can and bucket tools. In fact, it's been 29 years since Microsoft Paint reared its head in Windows 1.0, far more than enough time for graphical illustration softwares to evolve in leaps and bounds. Tilt Brush, a new application from VR prototyping agency, Skillman & Hackett, just might be the next-gen answer to the Paint apps of yore—a virtual reality painting tool that gives users control over a three-dimensional brush.

The winner of three Proto Awards from the Virtual Reality Foundation, including Best GUI, Best Interaction Design, and Most Innovative Virtual Reality Application, Tilt Brush uses the Oculus Rift to, in the words of Skillman & Hackett, paint "brush strokes, smoke, stars. Even light." It even has an "auto-GIF" function.

While details about how it works remain sparse, one Redditor speculates that, "It looks like they're doing 2D planar drawing and you have to do some action (scroll wheel, something) to pan and rotate that 2D plane." One thing's for sure—we can't wait to paint in 3D.
