Is The Digitial Revolution Helping Or Hurting Creativity?

Documentary PressPausePlay mulls over the positives and negatives of the democratization of creativity.

Got a spare hour and a half? No? Well then clear out your schedule and watch this film, PressPausePlay, instead.

We’ve all heard plenty about how the internet has unleashed the creative potential of the common person and democratized culture. If you haven’t, then you should look into crawling out from underneath that rock and getting a high-speed internet connection for your cave, pronto. But with everyone suddenly able to create and share, it means a whole load of junk comes pouring into the world too. Filtering it out is kind of the job of blogs and websites, editors and curators, but still: are we awash in a sea of lameness? Have our standards dropped? Does it matter? Who can answer these questions that plague creativity in the digital age? You? Me? Famous people?

Well, maybe this documentary can help, as it addresses the issue of whether we can enjoy more art than ever before in all manner of different ways or whether the web has ruined it for everyone, laying waste to once thriving creative industries and making Rebecca Black a star. Does it foster creativity or dilute it? Maybe it does a bit of both, but one thing’s for sure, everyone has an opinion about it and the debate will rage on. And on…

Anyway, helping to prove the point that free stuff is awesome, the makers have released the entire documentary online. Talking heads include Robyn, Seth Godin, Sean Parker, Hot Chip, and Moby.

Digital Revolution: Good Or Bad? Discuss.
