It's Art: Microwaving a Nintendo 3DS

Gamers: get ready to get heated.

Every now and then, The Creators Project comes across an artwork that surprises and delights us every bit as much as it confuses us and otherwise has us begging for answers. This is art that defies conventions, challenges sensibilities, and breaks down barriers between comprehension and critique. You might like it—you might not "get it." But we do. Turn on, take a deep breath, and just remember: It's art!

The melted 2015 3DS XL, via eBay

It's the limited edition handheld gaming console everyone wants. Or, it was:

In advance of the North American launch of the new Nintendo 3DS XL, a golden special edition Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask version quickly sold out, fetching prices upwards of $500 on secondary markets. Brilliant or either brilliantly ungrateful eBay user perfectlymadebirds got their hands on one, but instead of using it to play the new Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, put it in the microwave.

According to the eBay listing, where the melted device is now being sold for $11,315, the 3DS XL was cooked "for purposes to CREATE ARTWORK using the microwaving process inside a fully customized microwaving robot shielded enclosure." After being blasted with "1200 Watts of microwaving power" from a "2.2 CUFT VINTAGE 1970s-era Whirlpool Microwave BEAST," it looks more like an overcooked Hot Pocket than the next-gen console it once was.

Also on eBay: perfectlymadebirds is selling a microwaved iPad Mini and a 2DS. Get 'em while they're hot.
