Whispering Pines 10 Is An Interactive Multimedia Pop-Opera

Mixing an ancient art form with new techniques in a surreal and comic tale about a hypochondriac.

Artistic performances in front of live audiences present the perfect opportunity for interactive multimedia, we’ve seen it happen with theater and now opera has welcomed the inclusion of digital techniques. In this one-act opera called Whispering Pines 10 about a hypochondriac named Cynthia, written by artist Shana Moulton and composer Nick Hallett, the physical sets have been replaced with live projections. Elements like live animation are incorporated into the narrative, creating a vibrant, constantly morphing backdrop that can change along with the character’s actions or words, making for a hybrid environment of virtual and real for the actor (Shana Moulton) to perform in. Opera is an art form usually associated with grandiose buildings, classical music, and powerful vocals, so it’s interesting to see these traditions mixing with electronic music and new media in this experimental pop-opera.
