When not designing for some of the biggest companies in the world, from MTV and Universal to Google, Nike, and Toyota, Canadian artist James White explores his own graphic interests. His latest project, an ongoing series called NeoWave, is a beautiful exploration of the sci-fi aesthetics of yesteryear.

"I've always been a fan of science fiction illustrators from the past. Guys like Moebius and Roger Dean who created wild, colorful landscapes full of strange and abstract architecture,” White tells The Creators Project.

“When I started exploring ideas for the NeoWave Series, I wanted it to be MY version of psychedelic art from the 70s and 80s. Neon skies, desert mirrors, and giant monuments to greet explorers as they travelled the cosmos. The series is ongoing, and I can't wait to see where it takes me."

The illustrations depict hilly, desert landscapes with colorful skies and alien moons floating above. Human figures are dwarfed by imposing abstract monuments, like giant crystals jutting from the ground and massive floating pyramids.

White’s bright, saturated colors give the illusion that the scenes are taking place simultaneously at dawn, dusk, and midday, making a sense of time just as elusive as a sense of place. Retrofuturist in ideology, the NeoWave series evokes a sense of nostalgia while still feeling completely fresh.
