Jonas & Francois’s short film for the Kia Soul Collective is packed with 80s references…reminiscent of their youth (and probably Kia’s new target audience). The first nostalgic plug (besides the music) is the pair of paint-splattered, button-adorned Jump high tops that are paired with a vest featuring a patch from the late-80s sitcom 21 Jump Street — some of you may remember the crime drama as Johnny Depp’s breakout role (we are still forever grateful for the introduction).Then the whole thing get’s all Marty McFly — the denim-on-denim clad, stringy-haired teenage boy tapes up his failing tailpipe and hops over the drivers’ side door of his beater of a car, undeniably evocative of the DeLorean DMC-12 time machine ride from Back to the Future. He flips numerous switches and buttons, and pops in his cassette tape right before the vehicle explodes into thin air, only to reappear as a shiny, red Kia Soul. Things get a little weird thereafter, and we won’t give away the ending, but let’s just say that we were thrilled to see so many of our favorite ’80s references artfully weaved into this short film. Even if it is a commercial.
