A Newspaper Anime Brings the Violence of News to Life

Artist Milkyeyes uses the newspaper to revolt against the powers that be.

With newsprint becoming more and more volatile, an artististic examination into depicting how the words could revolt off their pages seems like a timely and important departure. A new animation called Journal Animè from the milkyeyes takes some malicious doodling and turns it on its head, mildly jibing at heads of state and turning morbid crime scenes into Who Framed Roger Rabbit-like featurettes. Scenes of tragedy and violence in print are animated to reflect the messy internal outrage readers are feeling when bombarded with a constant stream of bad news from around the world.

The animated newspaper is more intense and angry than a normal Sunday edition, this version contains the right amount of darkness and overlays of emotive sketches, giving it ample Babadook vibes. There is something electric about watching a sequence of scribbles take over so much newsprint, erasing information with a blur of emotion.

The final scene of the short is a blur of black and white text interjected by white streaks that form into the shape of Edvard Munch’s iconic Scream.
