Jump Around: Sand Flea Robot Can Jump 30 Feet In The Air

Boston Dynamics continue their pursuit to create robots modelled after the creatures of earth, in the process scaring anyone with eyes by showing a glimpse of a potential world where mankind is caught in a deadly conflict with sentient robotic animals fighting to right the wrongs of that time when, as a kid, you scared the neighbour’s cat with firecrackers.

They now have a line of mechanical animals that rivals the Zoids toys. Their latest robotic incarnation is the Sand Flea Jumping Robot which, unsurprisingly, mimics the jumping ability of the sand flea.

The RC insectoid is 11lbs in weight and can jump 30 feet in the air whenever it wants while an “onboard stabilization system keeps it oriented during flight to improve the view from the video uplink and to control landings.” Nifty.

Below is the galloping robot cheetah we mentioned when they unveiled it a few weeks back and below that their new version of the RHex Rough-Terrain Robot, which eats up rugged terrain like an insatiable beast. Soon they’ll have an all-star team they can turn into a kid’s cartoon.
